چکیده

[1] The wind stress forcing of the Oregon coastal ocean during June–August 1999 is estimated from a regional mesoscale atmospheric model and from satellite scatterometer observations, supplemented by moored and coastal surface data and by a land-based wind profiler. Both the mean and variable components of model alongshore wind stress increase by factors of 3–4 from north to south along the Oregon coast. There is evidence of orographic intensification near Cape Blanco, which is supported by previous aircraft and ship observations during August 1995. The systematic southward increase of southward stress will drive enhanced ocean upwelling along the southern Oregon coast and suggests the new hypothesis that systematic variations in local wind stress may contribute to the observed offshore displacement of the coastal upwelling jet in this region. It is inferred from an analysis of the model and surface data that ocean upwelling modifies coastal surface air temperatures by 1–5 C over timescales of 12–24 hours.

The future of coastal upwelling in the Humboldt current from model projections

The Humboldt coastal upwelling system in the eastern South Pacific ocean is one of the most productive marine ecosystems in the world. A weakening of the upwelling activity could lead to severe ecological impacts. As coastal upwelling in eastern boundary systems is mainly driven by wind stress, most studies so far have analysed wind patterns change through the 20th and 21st Centuries in order t...

Delayed upwelling alters nearshore coastal ocean ecosystems in the northern California current.

Wind-driven coastal ocean upwelling supplies nutrients to the euphotic zone near the coast. Nutrients fuel the growth of phytoplankton, the base of a very productive coastal marine ecosystem [Pauly D, Christensen V (1995) Nature 374:255-257]. Because nutrient supply and phytoplankton biomass in shelf waters are highly sensitive to variation in upwelling-driven circulation, shifts in the timing ...

A Modeling Study of the Three-Dimensional Continental Shelf Circulation off Oregon. Part II: Dynamical Analysis

Sixty-day simulations of the subinertial continental shelf circulation off Oregon are performed for a hindcast study of summer 1999. In Part I, the model results are shown to compare favorably with in situ currents and hydrographic measurements obtained from an array of moored instruments and field surveys and high-frequency radar–derived surface currents. In this paper, the modeled three-dimen...

Introduction to special section: Coastal Advances in Shelf Transport

[1] The Coastal Ocean Advances in Shelf Transport (COAST) program conducted an interdisciplinary study of coastal upwelling off central Oregon during summer 2001. Two intensive field efforts during May–June and August 2001 were coordinated with ocean circulation, ecosystem, and atmospheric modeling of the region. A primary goal was to contrast the coastal ocean response to wind forcing in a reg...

Evolution of chemical, biological, and physical water properties in the northern California Current in 2005: Remote or local wind forcing?

[1] The spring onset of persistent upwelling-favorable winds was later than usual in the northern California Current system in 2005, resulting in delayed provision of inorganic nutrients to the upper waters of the coastal ocean. This study uses water column measurements to illustrate the evolution of temperature, salinity, nitrate and chlorophyll a prior to and after the onset of persistent loc...
